Abstract

In the article the essence of the concept of «value» as an object of study of axiology is disclosed. The results of experimental studies of the values of Ukrainian and European society were analyzed, that gave opportunity to create a valuable portrait of the population of Ukraine and to compare it with the most part of the population of Europe. It is noted that the Ukrainian values differ from their average values in Europe: the values of security, traditions, conformance and authority are more visible expressed in Ukraine, but the values of independence, hedonism, stimulation and goodwill, on the contrary, are more weakly expressed In addition, Ukraine anticipates other countries in having one of self-affirmation component, namely, that focus on wealth, respect and authority over people, but not active self-realization and dedication. It is accented that the «average Ukrainian» has stronger expressiveness of the values that belong to the category of «preservation» (security, conformality, tradition), than the another majority representatives that are involved in the research of countries, and, conversely, has lower expressiveness of the values that belong to the opposite in the content of the category «openness to change» (autonomy, hedonism, stimulation). Ukrainians the value of success achievements and its social recognition are expressed stronger than the respondents from most other countries, The general configuration of the differences of the «average Ukrainian» creates the image of a person who has a high degree of caution (or even fear), the need for protection from a strong state, conservatism, the desire «to be emunctorily acquiescent» and the fear of social condemnation. Accordingly, it has relatively poorly expressed needs for novelty, creativity, freedom and independence, it does not have a tendency to risk and desire for fun and pleasure. At the same time, it seeks wealth and power, as well as personal success and social recognition, however, the desired achievements do not involve creativity and the creation of a new one.
