Abstract

The history of foundation and activities of the Pedagogical Society in Berehove in 1927-1937 has been researched. His significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian education and national-cultural life in the Transcarpathian region was noted. It was established that the main purpose of the Society was to raise the Ukrainian school system. The society was «against the decline of language and nationality, magyarization and russification», conducted active educational work, promoted the development of publishing, and advocated the introduction of mandatory study of the Ukrainian language in all schools in Transcarpathia. Unlike Hungarian organizations that have received state aid for the development of their own educational institutions, the Society has been operating at the expense of membership fees, sponsorship, and its own economic activities. The most significant achievements of the Society include the creation of the People's House, a private boarding school for children from poor peasant families, the opening of Ukrainian classes at the state school in the village Gunyadi and the state school for Ukrainian children in the village Novaya Betrad. It also provided financial assistance to several Ukrainian students at the Berehove Gymnasium from poor peasant families to continue their education. The company's particularly close relationship with the local branch Prosvita and Plast. Members of the Society considered their greatest achievement to be the opening of the People's House, which, in their opinion, became the center of Ukrainian national life in Berehove. It was noted that the Society not only contributed to the dissemination of Ukrainian-language education in the region but also the formation of a nationally conscious youth, which in the future became an active participant in the national liberation struggles of Ukrainians in Transcarpathia, the political result of which was the proclamation of Carpatho-Ukraine, the rise of which prolonged the processes of state-building of the Ukrainian nation, interrupted after the defeat of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921.
