The indicators of civil self-identification of the adult population of the country are important qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the Ukrainian nation development both at the regional and national levels, as well as in the context of the European integration policy of Ukraine. The prevailing identities of the Ukrainian population are national and state, as well as local. During the existence of independent Ukraine, there are three stages of national-civil identity elevation, the borders between which clearly coincide with two bifurcation crises (Maidan) in 2004-2005 and 2013-2014. Since 2004, under the influence of the political conjuncture in Ukraine, a concept the "Southeast" appeared and actively propagated by certain political forces in Ukraine. A specific "south-eastern" identity was built on the residual "Soviet identity", propensity to paternalism of power, economic pragmatism and demonstrative usage of Russian language. In this context, the East of Ukraine stands out, which differs from the rest of the regions by a considerably higher level of regional self-identification of the inhabitants, which gradually pushed forward the post-Soviet identity. Despite the declared state's course on European integration and significant progress in this direction, European identity is not a priority for the inhabitants of any region of Ukraine. Compared to states members of  EU, in accordance with the correlation of national and European self-awareness, Ukrainians would be included in the top five nations with a predominance of purely national self-awareness.
